Making ECRIF Statements

  • Task 1. Learning a language. (This will open in a new window.)
  • Task 4. Reflecting on ECRIF

Task 2. Below are sentences one learner made while reflecting on the experience of learning Turkish with Rosetta Stone.

  • To familiarize you with ECRIF statements, match the beginnings of the sentences on the left with the endings on the right.
  • How would you modify these sentences so that they were true for your learning of "bir erkek cocuk"?

A.   I encountered the word “bir erkek cocuk”…
B.   I clarified the meaning of “bir erkek cocuk”…
C.   I worked on remembering that “bir erkek cocuk” means           pick up…
D.   I began to internalize “bir erkek cocuk” as meaning pick           up…
E.   I fluently used the word “bir erkek cocuk”…
  1. when I looked at the picture of the boy and also when I saw the picture of the different boy below. This helped me see that the whole phrase meant boy. I also noticed that 'cocuk' was present for girl so I wonder if that means child. I also pressed the speaker icon several times to help me hear the exact sounds, and realized 'cocuk' sounds like chujook to me.
  2. much later when I was at a party and I heard a Turkish friend talking about his family and I immediately recognized "bir erkek cocuk" and recognized it without having to think about it. I was also able to use the word to tell someone that I have a boy.
  3. when I heard it again in the next screen and had to click on the correct picture. I also repeated it several times to myself.
  4. when I heard it and saw the letters but didn't know what it meant.
  5. later in the day when I saw some children at a playground at a park near my house and I said "bir erkek cocuk" to name them. It also helped me when I though of other boys that I know and actions that they do and how they sound and associated that with "bir erkek cocuk"

Matching answers: A=4, B=1, C=3, D=5, E=2

Task 3. Now think more about your own experience learning Turkish and make ECRIF statements about what you did to learn the meaning and pronunciation of specific words. Don't worry if you can't remember all of the words. Just focus on what you do remember. For example...
-What helped you encounter and clarify the word 'okuyor'?
-What helped your remember and internalize the word 'adam'?

  • bir erkek çocuk
  • bir kiz çocuk
  • bir kadin
  • bir adam
  • bir kitap
  • bir gazete
  • Erkek cocuk gazete okuyor.
  • Kadin gazete okuyor.
  • Adam kitap okuyor.
  • Kiz cocuk kitap okuyor.
